One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Peggy Sue” by Buddy Holly!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 1PM-4PM ET.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Here’s a link to have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”: https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

One of my earliest musical memories that grabbed the attention of my developing grade school brain was a truly unique rockabilly song that featured drums as a major part of it!

By the time I first heard “Peggy Sue” by Buddy Holly, he had already been deceased for a number of years. The song was released in 1957. It would still be several more additional years before I would understand that he and two other young, rising artists (Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper) along with the pilot died in a plane crash on February 3, 1959.

Trying to recall first memories of music is not a perfect process. There’s a lot of mileage between that first experience and today.

However, after giving some thought to “Peggy Sue,” it’s fairly easy for me to remove the cobwebs and venture back to a time when I had very little knowledge…about anything.

I knew that even as a child, Jerry Allison’s drums sounded like they were pounding straight from Valhalla to my ears!

The drums were thunderous!

They were glorious!

To me, they were a very joyful noise!

And even then in my infant years, I knew that “Peggy Sue” was different than all of the other songs I’d heard–before or since!

In it’s most basic structure, it’s basically a two minute and 29 second drum solo!

It has no cymbals, and I still like it!

And Buddy Holly’s quirky vocal rises above the impressive drums!

The lyrics are almost silly, but they bore right into my young brain and made it simple for me to sing along.

They were so catchy!

In the middle of all of that action, Buddy delivered a guitar solo that was simple perfection!

“Peggy Sue,” a song written by Jerry Allison and producer Norman Petty to attract Jerry’s future wife, was absolutely one of my earliest favorite songs!

And it prepared my brain for the coming British Invasion and lifelong interest in drums!

It makes perfect sense that Buddy Holly was a major influence for The Beatles and that Invasion!
